Living with Wildlife: an Impossible Dream?

At this point in the chapter, it may appear that living in harmony with wildlife is an ‘impossible dream’. Humans do not always understand and manage their own behaviour and relationships well, and many do not have a basic understanding of other species’ behaviour, even when they live with them as pets (Boyd et al, 2004). A growing number of conservationists are calling for environments to be set aside as protected areas that are kept free of all human activities (Locke and Deardon, 2005), including tourists and researchers (Goldsmith, 2005b), with field workers and scientists being called upon to develop and abide by more stringent ethical guidelines in order to avoid negative impacts on humans and wildlife alike during the course of field or ‘real-world’ research (MacKinnon and Riley, 2010). Ultimately, the only way we can live in harmony with wildlife is to change our own behaviour, both as individuals and as local or global communities, and plan environments and ways safely to interact with other species by incorporating knowledge from experts in all aspects of planning and building infrastructure, along with experts in conservation medicine, conservation biology and conservation psychology. The rest of this chapter will focus on the emerging field of conservation psychology and its application in a zoo setting, as a way of encouraging pro-conservation sustainable behaviour.
